Evening Sounds

The melody of social kids
slips between the loose curtains;
attention-getting shouts,
whispered secrets, giggles.

In their tree-protected camp,
no light, just a hundred yards
from home, they are still
children in their Mother's eye.

With notions of themselves
and small pictures of the world
they build their fortress
and become their parents.

In the dark, I cannot see them
so I remember, and hear my own
bold creations which are still
longed for at the edge of sleep.
